Doctor of Audiology
Hi! I am Arden Brown, Registered Audiologist, Doctor of Audiology and I have been practicing since 1998. I specialized in Auditory Processing Testing and Auditory Training Therapy. In my 25 years as an audiologist, I have practiced as an audiologist to neurotologist who specialized in dizziness, as a provincial audiologist, as a private practice audiologist, and most recently as an educational audiologist within First Nation Communities.
Back in 2005, I was a provincial audiologist and would receive requests for auditory processing assessments from across Manitoba and Ontario. However, I could not asses most due to the fact they were out of my provincial catchment. That is why I opened ABC Children's Audiology and Hearing Services to fill a gapping need in the province.
Over the years, I have assessed children and adults from all over Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario and internationally. The practice eventually evolved into providing Auditory Training Therapy. Auditory Training Therapy can help improve the quality of children and adults lives. Auditory Training is not just for those diagnosed with an Auditory Processing Disorder (APD previously known as CAPD), it can also be beneficial for those with a permanent hearing loss with and without hearing aids.
ABC Children's Audiology still remains the only private practice in Manitoba to assess Auditory Processing abilities and the only option for Auditory Training Therapy.
The waiting list for hearing assessments can be lengthy through a few of the provincial audiology programs. Many parents decide to seek a hearing test privately but it can be difficult to find an audiologist in private practice willing or able to assess a small child. Many times it is due to equipment constraints. ABC Children's Audiology specializes in children and will assess younger then any private practice audiologist in the province.
ABC Children's Audiology also tests adults hearing. If you have had your hearing tested and you were told it was "normal" but you still struggle, you may have a functional hearing loss. An assessment at ABC Children's Audiology will differ from most hearing tests and investigate your concerns in a more in-depth manner.
If a medical specialist has requested a hearing test prior to an appointment, contact ABC Children's Audiology to set up an appointment.
If you or your child is 17 years old and younger and identifies as First Nation with a Treaty Number or one parent with a Treaty Number, ABC Children's Audiology may be able to get our services covered through Jordan's Principle. Please contact for further details.
Hearing loss happens at all ages not just with aging. Hearing is one of the main building blocks in a child's development. Did you know that 8-12% of school-age children have a permanent hearing loss but only 15% are diagnosed.
(APD previous known as CAPD)
Auditory processing is what we do with what we hear. Hearing test may be "normal" but the individual is still not "understanding". A few possible signs of a Auditory processing weakness are difficulty understanding in noise, easily distracted, inattentive, educational challenges, difficulty with spelling, reading, and writing.
Auditory processing can be weak due to an Auditory Processing Disorder, hearing loss, brain injury, and other factors. Auditory Training Therapy helps improves an individuals ability to process auditory information. Auditory Training Therapy is curtailed to the individuals needs.
